Are You Gaining Weight TOO FAST?

Hi ,

Lately there's been a TON of media covering pregnant and post-pregnant celebrities.

In fact, everywhere you turn some tabloid is commenting on HOW MUCH weight so and so gained and HOW FAST she took if off.

Believe you me, I do NOT love to read all of those tabloid magazines, but even I get sucked in to reading how much each celebrity gained!

And the thing I find most interesting is that even the celebrities don't keep to the rule of only gaining 25-35 pounds (11kg-15kg). Britney Spears gained 50 pounds (23kg) and Kate Hudson gained 60 pounds (27kg). Even Katie Holmes was rumored to have gained more than 40 pounds (18kg) during her pregnancy.

So why are we gaining so much weight these days? I get so many emails from stressed mothers asking me how to minimize their weight gain.

Well here's the truth....

A woman's weight gain DURING pregnancy is dependent on her PRE-PREGNANCY weight.

Meaning Kate Hudson and Britney Spears (to name a few) who were underweight to begin with, gained the right amount of weight for their size! They started low and they gained more than "normal".

Does that mean they were overeating?

Not at all. This even happened to me. I ate well and exercised my entire pregnancies, but I gained 43 pounds (20kg) during my first pregnancy and 50 pounds (23kg) for my second.

Everyone commented on how amazing I looked and that I only gained weight in my tummy area.

Not until I set out to do my own investigating on women's body weight during pregnancy did I understand what was going on. I was always baffled as to why some women only gained 15 pounds (7kg), while others gained 50 or 60.

Have you felt your baby move yet? In my survey of over 500 moms, the majority said feeling their baby move was the BEST experience of pregnancy!

Speaking of you and your baby - are you giving her all the nutrition that she needs?

Your breakfast, or the "Breaking of your Fast" from the night before is the most important thing you can do to BOOST your energy. 

By eating a good quality breakfast, you can avoid a mid-morning energy low, which leads to overeating and poor food choices. And overeating or poor food choices - well, you know where it goes from there – weight gain! 

A “healthy” breakfast contains a good balance of complex carbohydrates, fiber
(oats, whole grain cereal), protein (yogurt, cheese, eggs), and of course, fresh fruit or vegetables (for those of you who like a more Mediterranean-style breakfast!).


Aim for GOOD QUALITY FOOD sources that are high in VITAMIN B and FIBER such as whole grains, multigrain bread, and oatmeal.

Also aim for foods with good sources of IRON (raisins and apricots) and CALCIUM (yogurt, milk, cheese, cottage cheese, and almonds).

I am always in such a hurry in the mornings and usually grab a Slim-Fast (already made) shake for breakfast. Do you think it would be okay to continue drinking the Slim-Fast? I have been eating smaller meals about every two to three hours each day and drinking TONS of water.

MY OPINION:

Lisa, you've definitely got the right idea - eating smaller, more frequent meals and drinking TONS of water are both excellent “habits” to have adopted now that you're pregnant! On the Slim-Fast shake, though, I would opt for a healthier choice.

Because your baby is 100% dependent on what you're feeding him/her - now is the time to turn over a new leaf. Some healthier (but still quick!) alternatives that I can recommend are: oatmeal, yogurt and fresh fruit or muesli with milk (or soya milk).

To the best of your ability DO take time to eat well in the morning even though you're rushed - you owe it to yourself and your baby.
