Top 12 Do's and Don'ts

Hi ,

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the amount of Do's and Don'ts that you're constantly bombarded with as a pregnant woman? I get SO MANY emails asking me - "Can I do this? Or Can I do that? Help!"

The problem with pregnancy is that it's often hard to get a DEFINITIVE 'yes' or 'no' to a question. And unfortunately, there is NO instruction manual for pregnancy - some "experts" may say one thing, like coloring your hair is OK, while another "expert" will say it isn't!

So, I've compiled a quick list of the most commonly asked questions with my OPINION as to whether I'd put them on my OWN Do or Don't list! Just so you know, I am definitely more on the conservative side, especially when it comes to things like hair dye, paint and cleaning supplies.

Here are my Top 12 Do's and Don'ts

Do...

1. Exercise 3x's a week (with your health care provider's okay, of course!)
2. Eat small, frequent meals throughout the day (aim to eat every 2-3 hours)
3. Strengthen your CORE muscles (VERY important, refer to my CORE books!)
4. Eat healthy, well-balanced meals (with minimal treats!!)
5. Take your prenatal vitamins
6. Drink 10 glasses of pure water every day
7. Take an essential fatty acid supplement
8. Minimize your overwhelm
9. Sleep on your left side
10. Stretch regularly
11. Wear your sunscreen (prevent the dreaded pregnancy MASK!)
12. Reat and elevate your feet daily

Don't...

1. Diet
2. Paint your house (the fumes are dangerous)
3. Dye your hair (rather stick to highlights if you have to do anything!)
4. Do any fake tanning
5. Lift weights over your head
6. Perform any kind of strenuous work, including advanced exercise
7. Stand for long periods of time OR cross your legs
8. Wear tight, restrictive clothing, especially around your legs
9. Expose yourself to harsh chemicals (including cleaning materials)
10. Participate in activities that involve quick, jerky movements
11. Sit in hot tubs, hot baths or exercise in excessive heat
12. Eat sushi, cold rice or soft cheeses

As I've said before, these are my OPINIONS. Because there are a lot of questions that don't have definitive answers, you need to make the best decision for you and your baby - just make sure you are as knowledgeable as you can be about the risks involved!

Remember, pregnancy is only 40 weeks - if you can put something "questionable" off until after your baby is born try to do so - you'll do great!
