Eat anything you want. Just relish it

My dear Weight Loss,

Not too long ago, I ate a bag of potato chips.

Sea salt and vinegar.

I even licked the little crumbs from my fingertips.

And you know what? The whole experience was exquisite.

And it reminded me of an insight that one of my teachers taught
me, back in the day:

"It's not only what you eat, it's HOW you eat it."

This one little precious gem has proved more helpful than I could
have ever known at the time.

Because on the surface, it seems so simple. But it really holds a key
to a more dangerous idea.

That's right, I said it. Dangerous.

And this dangerous idea is that it's not only okay to feel pleasure,
it's necessary.

Especially if you intend to feel really, really good in your body.
(And slim down, in the process.)

Think about it. Look around, and you'll see people who eat:

  • With little "presence"
  • So fast they barely chew their food before they swallow it
  • By barely touching anything on their plate
  • At a stoplight in their car
  • Like it was a solemn duty
  • In front of the television
  • In the darkness, when no one's watching, in the middle of the night
  • … and then feel bad about eating

Maybe you can relate to a few of these? I know I can (I used to finish
a bag of chips and then IMMEDIATELY feel like a horrible failure. Talk
about being my own worst critic!)

The crazy truth of it all is, there's very little savoring going on there.
There's scant joy.

In these cases, food isn't really being relished.

It's just being used.

So I got to thinking. If Michael Pollan can have his food rules about
modern shopping and feeding yourself in an era of factory farms,
why can't we have our own guide to eating with great gusto… and
pleasure?

And, my dear, I am so tickled to share with you my most recent
thoughts on this very subject. Because my research and work with
my clients has utterly convinced me of this:

HOW you eat really matters in how you look and how you feel.

Look, I've been helping women lose weight using pleasure for the
past 10 years. And I'm coming to see how pleasure is really an
outlaw in our culture.  We've been hoodwinked into believing that
we must push and punish ourselves to get what we desire.

Well, who says?

Not me! That's why I'm having a lot of fun thinking of pleasure as
a notorious character.

And it's also why I am so devoted to sharing its benefits with you.

Because when you eat with pleasure, incredible things happen, like:

  • You smile + relax
  • You signal to your metabolism that it's okay to process fat (because you're not in a "stress state")
  • Your body lets you know when she has had "enough"
  • You become much more fun to eat with
  • You eat less when you're less hungry
  • You develop the ability to feel things like "hunger" and "fullness"
  • All your senses come alive and you are more present to the world around you

… and the sum total of all this is that the act of eating naturally
aligns with the act of nourishing, fueling, and appreciating yourself.

I wish you all kinds of pleasure in your life. And one of the simplest
ways to grasp the pleasurable approach to weight loss (and see how
it's different from other methods) is to learn about how it applies to
eating.

Much love,

Jena
