Hi Loseweight,

Today I want to clarify some things to you about the good old "calorie".  What is a calorie, why is it important, and how can "knowing" this info lead to dieting success.

We hear people talking about calories all the time..."how many calories are in that," "I've got to watch my calorie intake," "that is so high in calories," but what, exactly, is a calorie?

Well, to be precise, a calorie is the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree celsius. What??

Basically, calories are the potential amount of energy a piece of food will give us. You see, the body needs energy everyday to function, and then when we exert ourselves we burn even more energy, hence we burn more calories.

Being over weight, being the ideal weight and being under weight all depends on calorie intake.  We need calories in order to survive, but if we eat too many or too little, we will be unhealthy.

Calories In vs. Calories Out...

The key to finding your perfect weight and daily caloric intake number is to keep in mind that there should be a balance of calories in and calories out, meaning that when you eat calories you will also need to burn calories in order to not overeat.

Our bodies are constantly burning calories.  We are using up calories when we brush our teeth, type on our computers, even when we blink.  We use more calories though when we do things like go for a run, take the stairs or play tennis, so when we are participating in physical activities, our need for calories increases.

If you do not exercise, you will not need to eat as many calories as someone who does.  The good news? The more you exercise, the more you can eat!

You can find out how many calories you should be eating with this free online tool:

http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm

For example, let's say you are a 30 year old female who weighs 125 pounds, is 5'4'' and doesn't exercise.  Your daily caloric intake to maintain your weight would be 1,528 calories/day, but if you wanted to lose weight, it would be 1,222 calories per day.

Now let's say that same 30 year old female who weights 125 pounds and is 5'4'', but this time, she exercises 3 times a week.  Her daily caloric intake to maintain her weight would be 1,751 and to lose weight it would be 1,400.  See how she can eat more calories because she includes exercise in her routine?

Calories are an important part of daily life, and it is vital to understand how they work.  Next time you are at the grocery store, make sure to see how many calories are in your favorite bag of chips, and think about how much exercise you would need to do in order to keep your energy balanced and burn them off.
